There is a running joke in our family that I have expensive taste—like Sprite on a Kool-Aid budget;) So I don’t think it’s a surprise that I like Pottery Barn stuff—who doesn’t?? But since the price tag doesn’t match my budget, I am always trying to find a way to get what I want anyway—that’s why I do it myself!
Justin’s room is space themed, and I wanted to add something to the walls that would help bring in color, and tie in to the dark blue space wall we had painted.
I didn’t have anything graphic on the bed, so I knew the walls would be a perfect place for something.
I bought four, white canvases from Hobby Lobby and just sat down with a pencil and sketched a few things that reminded me of space. I had something pictured in my mind of a child’s rendering for the art, so I went with basic shapes more than detailed sketches. I also wanted to include words along the top—all in the same color to tie the four pieces together and make them cohesive. I also added a light blue “galaxy” line through all four canvases in the background to make them all look more unified.
My mom was here when we started sketching and helped me with the Alien—which was our favorite! Once I sketched them all roughly, I just used acrylic paints that I had on hand and went to work. Here’s how they turned out…
Justin saw me painting these and came over and picked up a brush and painted almost all the craters on the moon!! I was SO proud of him!!
These are so easy to make, and so affordable. I think I spent less than $20 for all four art pieces!!
